Alkaline water has become increasingly popular due to its potential health benefits, including improved hydration and antioxidant properties. However, not all alkaline water is the same. There are two common types: mineral-based alkaline water and ionized alkaline water, which is produced through electrolysis. While both claim to provide similar benefits, the processes used to produce them and their effects on the body are quite different. In this article, we will explore the differences between these two types of alkaline water and the potential risks associated with ionized water.
Alkaline water refers to water with a pH level above 7, making it less acidic than regular drinking water. It can be produced in two primary ways:
Mineral-based alkaline water is either naturally sourced from springs or produced by adding alkaline minerals. These minerals not only increase the water’s pH but also provide essential nutrients that support various physiological functions.
Ionized alkaline water, sometimes referred to as "electrolyzed" water, is created by using a specialized water ionizer machine. This machine uses electricity to separate water into its acidic and alkaline components. The alkaline portion is consumed for its higher pH, while the acidic portion is typically discarded. While this process can produce water with a similar pH to mineral-based alkaline water, it also introduces reactive chemicals that may have negative effects.
One significant concern with ionized alkaline water is the formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH·) during the electrolysis process. Hydroxyl radicals are highly reactive oxidants that can cause oxidative stress in the body by damaging cells, DNA, and proteins.
A study published in the Journal of Food Science pointed out that hydroxyl radicals, formed during the electrolysis process, can act as prooxidants, potentially counteracting the antioxidant claims made by manufacturers. While some ionizer companies promote the antioxidant effects of ionized water, these free radicals may increase oxidative stress, which is linked to chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular issues.
Oxidant Exposure: The electrolysis process generates hydroxyl radicals, which are known to cause oxidative stress. Over time, oxidative stress can lead to cellular damage and contribute to various health problems.
A study in Electroanalysis found that ionized alkaline water produced via electrolysis exposes individuals to hydroxyl radicals, which are potent oxidants. Prolonged exposure to these radicals could negate any supposed health benefits of the water.
Absence of Natural Minerals: Unlike mineral-based alkaline water, ionized water often lacks essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. This absence can lead to an imbalance in electrolytes if the diet does not compensate for the missing nutrients.
Feature | Mineral-Based Alkaline Water | Ionized Alkaline Water |
---|---|---|
Production Method | Natural or through mineral addition | Produced through electrolysis |
Mineral Content | Contains essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium | Often lacks natural minerals |
Presence of Hydroxyl Radicals | None generated | Generates hydroxyl radicals (OH·) |
Health Benefits | Supports hydration, electrolyte balance, and bone health | Potential risks due to oxidant exposure |
Taste and Naturalness | Smooth, natural mineral taste | Often has a metallic or chemical taste |
While both mineral-based alkaline water and ionized alkaline water can raise pH levels and improve hydration, mineral-based alkaline water offers additional benefits by providing essential electrolytes like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These minerals support various bodily functions and do not expose the consumer to potentially harmful oxidants.
On the other hand, ionized alkaline water, produced through electrolysis, introduces hydroxyl radicals, which can increase oxidative stress in the body. This can negate any potential antioxidant benefits and lead to long-term health risks. For these reasons, it is generally recommended to choose mineral-based alkaline water over ionized water for better overall health and hydration without the risk of oxidative damage.
